Mole Lake - As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the impact on Native Americans is getting worse.
There are over 500 federally recognized sovereign Indian Nations across the country, including 11 here in Wisconsin each with their own response to the pandemic.
Recently, the CDC found Native Americans to be more than 5 times more likely than White Americans to be hospitalized, due to COVID-19. That was the largest disparity of any racial or ethnic group measured. It also found: per capita, nearly 50 percent more people in Wisconsin's native American population have died from COVID-19 than in the state as a whole.
The Sokaogon Chippewa Community is preparing for the long-haul.
Mole Lake Casino and Lodge closed down on March 20th as part of the Community's strategy to combat COVID-19. Compared to most tribal nations across the country, the Sokaogon Chippewa Community was doing well.
But even the best plans aren't perfect.
'This is really close to my heart because we have had COVID-19 hit this community hard, we've had two tribal elders,' said SCC Health Director Jamie Zarda.
The community is tight knit
'I feel that the Sokaogon Chippewa community and its ICS system has done an exceptional job, the team itself has done an exceptional job at keeping individuals informed,' said ICS Incident Action Planner Chris McGeshick.
Closing down hasn't come without its costs
'We understand business, we understand business,' said McGeshick. 'Our gaming facility, which is our number one money maker for our community is closed and remains closed because the protection of our community is the number one goal.'
SCC has rapid tests and antibody tests, along with the more common, slower testing options.
'The capacity we have is what's unique to us,' said Zarda. 'We have three of the abbot ID machines that enable us to do lots of testing. And drive thru testing!'

The I-C-S team meets daily, stakeholders from every part of the tribal government collaborate internally and externally
'We all have different sections, we all have different job duties and responsibilities, but we're all focusing on the same intent which is to slow the spread of COVID 19,' said McGeshick.
'We work very closely with Forest County Potawatomi and forest county themselves,' said Lead Contact Tracer Maia Kegley. 'We reach out to them. They know that if they need help with contact tracing we are here to help and vice versa; they are here to help us with our contact tracing as well.'
It's a commitment to keeping their community safe that motivates the team
'I feel like this community is feeling it really hard right now, but we're getting through it together,' said Kegley.
'We are very lucky in the sense - our community is very tight knit, very trusting,' said Zarda. 'I mean, I work here because the community is a great community.'
